Quick Answer: Can You Run Sherlock Online?

Not officially. Sherlock is a free, open-source command-line tool, and its project pages do not list a hosted web version, so sites offering "Sherlock online" are run by third parties. To use Sherlock itself, install it with pipx install sherlock-project (or use the sherlock/sherlock Docker image) and run sherlock username.

If you just want the same kind of answer, where a username exists, without installing anything, use a browser tool. Lullar is free with no signup: it automatically checks the username on about 60 sites, shows which confirm an account, and gives one-click searches on 175+ platforms. whatsmyname.app runs the WhatsMyName dataset (700+ sites, the project says) in the browser. Lullar is a separate tool with its own site list, not a web version of Sherlock.

What Sherlock Is

Sherlock is an MIT-licensed Python program, created by Siddharth Dushantha and maintained by the Sherlock Project, that hunts for a username across social networks. Its README says it covers 400+ social networks. You give it one or more usernames; it asks each site whether a profile exists at that address and prints the ones it finds.

How to Install and Run Sherlock

These are the methods listed on the Sherlock Project's own installation page in October 2026.

  1. With pipx (recommended by the project): install Python 3 and pipx, then run pipx install sherlock-project. Without pipx, pip install --user sherlock-project also works. Check it with sherlock --version.
  2. Search: run sherlock user123. Found profiles print to the screen and save to user123.txt; add --csv or --xlsx for a spreadsheet.
  3. With Docker (no Python needed): docker pull sherlock/sherlock, then docker run --rm -t sherlock/sherlock user123.
  4. Package managers: Fedora has an official package (sudo dnf install sherlock-project). Homebrew (brew install sherlock), Kali (sudo apt install sherlock) and BlackArch packages exist but are maintained by third parties.

The project's README warns that third-party packages for ParrotOS and Ubuntu 24.04 appear to be broken; on those systems use pipx, pip or Docker instead. Install only from the official sherlock-project package or the github.com/sherlock-project repository.

When a Browser Tool Is Faster, and When Sherlock Wins

Use a browser tool such as Lullar when:

Use Sherlock (or Maigret) when:

Many investigators use both: a browser search first for a quick map, then a command-line run when the case needs depth.

From Username to Person: Spokeo

Sherlock and the browser tools tell you where a username exists. None of them tells you who the person is. When the profiles do not show a real name and you need a phone number or address, use a paid people-search service; Spokeo is our pick.

Spokeo (founded 2006, Pasadena, California) searches by name, phone number, email or address against 12+ billion US records, and results can include full name, age, addresses, phone numbers, relatives and social profiles. Reviewers in September 2026 reported about $20–30 a month; confirm at checkout. Its data comes from public sources that may be incomplete or out of date.

Spokeo is not a consumer reporting agency under the FCRA, so do not use it for employment, tenant, credit or insurance decisions. And remember that the same username on two sites is not proof of the same person: confirm with matching photos, bio details or cross-links before you rely on a match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an official online version of Sherlock?

No. The Sherlock Project's README and website describe a command-line tool you install with pipx, pip or Docker, and do not list a hosted web version. Websites that offer Sherlock online are run by third parties. For a no-install username search, use a browser tool such as Lullar or whatsmyname.app.

How do I install Sherlock?

Install Python 3 and pipx, then run pipx install sherlock-project, or use pip install --user sherlock-project. With Docker, run docker run --rm -t sherlock/sherlock followed by the username. Then search with sherlock user123; results save to user123.txt.

Is Lullar the same as Sherlock?

No. Lullar is a separate, free browser-based tool with its own site list. It automatically checks a username on about 60 sites and gives one-click searches on 175+ platforms, and it also accepts a name or email. Sherlock is a command-line tool the project says covers 400+ social networks.

What checks more sites than Sherlock?

Maigret, a free open-source command-line tool, says it supports about 5,900 sites, with the 500 most popular checked by default. In a browser, WhatsMyName Apps says it checks 3,450+ sites, and the WhatsMyName dataset behind whatsmyname.app covers 700+ sites, the project says.

Is it legal to use Sherlock or a username search?

Checking where a public username exists is generally legal. Using the results to stalk or harass someone is not, and people-search reports may not be used for employment, tenant, credit or insurance decisions under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
